Summer
Vet

June 21 - 25, 2010

To be contacted for the Summer 2010 program, please contact Courtney Butler.

The Summer Vet Program is a student's ticket to the world of veterinary medicine! For students who are serious about becoming a veterinarian, this is a super opportunity to look into the real and sometimes gritty field of veterinary medicine. Through presentations, demonstrations, laboratories, visits, and in-depth, hands-on activities, students discover what modern veterinary medicine is about. Participants meet professors, practitioners, and students in the discipline and have ample opportunity to talk with them. Some of the activities of the program include (view the 2009 Summer Vet Schedule):

  • Examining skeletons and learning how specimens are prepared;
  • Discussing preparations for a career in veterinary medicine;
  • Studying emergency medicine and first aid;
  • Equine reproduction;
  • Cancer research in animals; and
  • Observing clinical procedures in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The Summer Vet program will be June 21 - 25, 2010, from ~1 PM - 4 PM at Colorado State University. It is highly encouraged that students combine this experience with the SciTrek program as many scientific concepts and research techniques that are important to an undergraduate science major, intent upon becoming a veterinarian, will be explored experimentally during the morning program. Additional information about CSU's professional veterinary medicine program can be found on the CVMBS web site.

Cost: (Note: there are a few tuition scholarships available for students who are economically disadvantaged. Scholarship applications are closed for this year.)

  • Commuter Fee - $400 (for Summer Vet only)
  • Residential Fee - $1,000 (for both Summer Vet and SciTrek and room and board*)
  • Combo Commuter Fee - $750 (for both Summer Vet and SciTrek)

This program is open to students entering grades 10 through 12 in August 2010. This is not a competitive program and registrations are processed on a first come, first serve basis and limited to 30 students, so don't delay! Completed Registration Packets consist of the SciTrek/Summer Vet Registration Form, the Release from Responsibility, Assumption of Risk and Waiver Form, the Consent for Treatment of Unemancipated Minor, the Emergency Card and a copy of the student's insurance card.

*For the Residential Program, students will stay on campus in the dorms (costs are based on double occupancy). CSU students will act as resident assistants and will plan evening activities with the students. Students should plan on arriving on campus on Sunday, June 20th by 5 PM to check into the dorm and plan on leaving Friday, June 25th immediately following the final class (~4 PM). Meals will be provided beginning Sunday evening and ending Friday morning. Those needing to stay over until Saturday morning will be charged an additional $50. Please note that those students wishing to stay on campus, MUST participate in BOTH the SciTrek and Summer Vet Programs.
