SciTrek:
Real Science, Real Research in a Safe, Environmentally Benign & Interdisciplinary Context

June 23 - 27, 2008

Summer 2008 Program is now FULL. To be put on a waiting list, please contact Sherrie Myers at sherrie.myers@colostate.edu.

Please note the new grade restrictions - only students entering the 10th through 12th grade in August 2008 will be accepted.

What do scientists really do? Join Colorado State University Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Director of the Center for Science, Mathematics & Technology Education in conducting real research based on current issues such as:

  • Spectroscopy, the structure and dynamics of atoms and molecules and applications in chemical, biological and astronomical analysis;
  • Environmental science and the impact of fossil fuel combustion on Colorado mountain ecology;
  • The biogeochemistry of mountain lakes and reservoirs;
  • Nanotechnology and enzymes, studies on the structure and dynamics of protein depolymerases
  • Studies in atmospheric air pollution science;
  • The science of cell phones, from microchemistry and physics to information systems;
  • Scientific studies on hydration - sports drinks and performance;
  • Material science and athletic equipment;
  • Buffers in biology, in-depth studies of pH and metal ion buffers in biological systems;
  • A blue rose, the science of anthocyanins and colour in flowers and leaves; and
  • Tablet PCs and applications to scientific visualization and analysis.

Students participating in SciTrek will learn how to be independent critical thinkers, assess scientific literature through Internet searches, design and execute critical experiments, and interpret and represent results of complex scientific experiments. Research will be conducted in state-of-the-art learning studios using Small-Scale Science techniques with personal mentoring from first-class researchers and professors. Come and join us for this unique experience! View a SciTrek testimonial from a student in the class of 2006.

This program is scheduled for June 23 - 27, 2008 from 9 AM - 12 Noon at Colorado State University. SciTrek can be combined with the Summer Vet program for a full day of science-based activities.

Cost: (Note: there are a few tuition scholarships available for students who are economically disadvantaged. For an application click here.)

  • Commuter Fee - $400 (for SciTrek only)
  • Residential Fee - $1,000 (for both Summer Vet and SciTrek and room and board*)
  • Combo Commuter Fee - $750 (for both Summer Vet and SciTrek)

Students entering grades 10 through 12 in August 2008 who are interested in attending the SciTrek program should submit a Registration Form by May 31, 2008. Registrations are processed on a first come, first serve basis, so don't delay!

*For the Residential Program, students will stay on campus in the dorms (costs are based on double occupancy). CSU students will act as resident assistance and will plan evening activities with the students. Students should plan on arriving on campus on Sunday by 5 PM to check into the dorm and plan on leaving Friday afternoon immediately following the final class. Meals will be provided beginning Sunday evening and ending Friday morning. Those needing to stay over until Saturday morning will be charged an additional $40.
