Overview of the Project A Component of DLESE The DWEL collection will be accessible through the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (www.DLESE.org). The DWEL resources will not be added to the DLESE library until mechanisms and procedures for determining which resources meet our criteria for exemplary are in place. However, the DLESE collection already includes over 4,000 high quality resources from all areas of Earth science. There are three components to DWEL:

Digital Water Education Library (DWEL) Collection By December 2003 DWEL will provide teachers, students, administrators, parents and informal educators with: -- Easy access to over 500 high quality exemplary digital resources related to the science, policy and economics of water -- A discovery tool will allow users to search the library catalog by content area, grade level, resource type and the national science standards -- Access to high quality graphics, animations, visualizations, databases, simulations, and text resources Experienced, practicing K-12 teachers who know the needs of their students and their peers are reviewing and selecting these exemplary resources, which best support teaching along core science concepts. There are also scientists and other topical experts working on this project to ensure the sources identified are accurate and appropriate for both formal and informal public education.

Earth the Water Planet (EWP) Revision An Experiment with Publishing The DWEL project is working with the National Science Teachers Association to revise their very popular publication, Earth: The Water Planet. There are two major components to this part of the project. -- A revision to develop several activities in a digital format that will be made available over the Internet for free -- A demonstration to conventional textbook publishers that providing free access to a portion of each of their publications is a good marketing strategy

Research into building community-based digital libraries The third component of the project is a research investigation on collection building. Many of the new digital library projects are emphasizing the reliance on 'virtual community groups' that are distributed across the country. An ethnographer will observe the work of the DWEL groups over the two-year grant period to develop a chronicle of the activities used to: -- Examine how to build virtual working communities -- Identify "best practices" for supporting and sustaining working groups -- Make recommendations for improving the collection building and review processes so that other groups may benefit from this experience
